Calling consists of a repetitive and simple rhythm: all the fours, forty-four; two and seven, twenty-seven. Some numbers had traditionally special calls, for example: two fat ladies, sixty-six.

It is a simple game that in Germany was once used to teach children multiplication, history and spelling.

A player plays with at least one card. As a person becomes more competent, he or she can check a number of cards for any one game – a book of six tickets being the most common for serious bingo-goers.

The card has 27 squares, laid out in nine columns and three rows. Each of the rows has five numbers and four blank squares. The columns contain one, two, or occasionally three numbers. Each card contains fifteen numbers.

Column one contains random numbers between 1 and 9, column two between 10 and 19, column three between 20 and 29, and so on, until the ninth column which contains the numbers 80 to 90 – 90 being the optimum number in UK bingo games.

A caller, who oversees the game, then shouts random numbers between one and 90. The winner of the game is the first one who marks off their 15 numbers.

The caller picks the numbers from a basket or blower and announces them to the players. The caller selects each ball randomly. It is also the responsibility of the caller to let players know what game they are playing. The most common games are straight-line bingo and coverall.

When a number has been called, it is usually displayed on a large TV screen or monitors around the room. The corresponding light on the scoreboard is usually activated too. This is a way to remind the players what numbers have been called.

As a number is called, the player scans their card. If they have the number that has been issued they mark it off. Players find that the easiest and quickest way to mark multiple cards is with a “dabber” or “dauber”. 

If the player has marked off all the numbers in the straight line or coverall, they call “Bingo” or “House” very loudly. The floorwalker will come and check the card and confirm if the player has won. If there is more than one call for the same game, the winnings will be shared equally.

This game is played with a deck of 52 cards, with the dealer giving every player a certain number of cards, which are either held in the hand or placed face down on the table. In addition, the dealer places another series of cards face down in the centre of the table. Each round of play consists of a series of bets followed by the dealer turning over one of the centre cards, and any individual who has the same rank value in their hand as the centre card must reveal and discard that card from their hand.

The overall concept of the game is that the betting rounds continue until a player has had all of the cards removed from his hand, with the first player to achieve this simply saying “bingo” and claiming the pot. Jacks are valued at 11, queens at 12, kings at 13, and aces are either one or 15 depending on a pre-arranged agreement between the players. A variant of the card version of bingo can also include the cards having the same value as traditional blackjack, with all face cards being assigned a value of 10 and aces being counted as one or 11.
