If you ever get confused as to what hand beats another in the game of poker the following is a list showing the ranking of hands from the best to the least valuable:
Royal Flush – an Ace through 10 Straight, all of the same suit.
Straight flush – any Straight wherein all 5 cards are of the same suit.
Four of a Kind – as the name implies, it is any 4 of the same ranked cards such as 4 Aces or 4 tens.
Full House – any 2 cards of the same ranking combined with any 3 cards of the same rank.
Flush – any non-consecutive 5 cards that are all of the same suit.
Straight – and consecutive combination of cards, but not the same suit, and Aces can be counted as either the high card or the low card of the Straight.
Three of a Kind – any three cards of the same ranking.
Two Pair – as the name implies, this is any two cards of the same rank combined with another two cards of the same rank.
One Pair – any two cards of the same ranking.
High Card – any hand that does not meet the criteria of any of the aforementioned hands.
Typically, when two or more players have the same winning hand, the money (or pot) is awarded to the player with the highest additional card or cards with the played hand. For example, let’s assume that two players both have a Full House. Player 1 has 3 Kings and 2 Aces whereas Player 2 has 3 Aces and 2 Kings. Player 2 would be declared the winner.
