Playing Video Poker Online

February 23rd, 2010

Video poker is typically based on five-card draw poker, and is played using personal computer software. Video poker is normally offered by many online casinos alongside their offerings of other games such as online slots, online card games – such as blackjack and baccarat – online bingo, online roulette and online sports betting.

Video poker, however, predates the online casino age, which came into being around 1996. The rise of personal computers in the 1970s resulted in video poker games on, compared with today, relatively basic machines. Nowadays, given the highly competitive nature of the online casino industry and the ease with which players can enter and leave particular online casinos – easier and faster than they would normally be able to enter and leave traditional bricks and mortar casinos, video poker is often innovated and automated to a highly sophisticated degree.

Also, in contrast to many bricks and mortar poker games, video poker can be played for relatively low sums of money. The emphasis is mostly on speed, enjoyment and ease of use. Variants of the game include Bonus Poker, based on Jacks or Better, which has an average higher degree of payout, and Double Bonus Poker, which has a payout bonus for four aces.

As with other online casino games such as online card games, video poker games can be entered on a tournament or progressive jackpot basis. Such games can be relatively long-lasting and pay large jackpots to the lucky winners.
